For many people, these diets become relegated to "fad diet" status. This is because we are creatures of habit. Diet Review – The Atkins Diet
The Atkins Diet Plan was created by Dr. Robert Atkins in the 1960's. He made changes to a diet he read about in the Journal of the American Medical Association, because he had his own issues with weight. After success with the diet, both for him and patients, he then wrote Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution in 1972 (which I still have), and then the revised Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution. A lot of disagreement surrounds this diet, and many people have had success with it.
Atkins recommends staying away from:
Refined carbohydrates
Sugar
Flour
High fructose corn syrup
Saturated fats are not a problem, but avoid the trans fats from hydrogenated oils
There are 4 stages in the Atkins Plan:
Induction Phase:
The first phase of this low carb diet is designed to put your body into ketosis. Ketosis means that the body will produce ketones from the fat, and is used as fuel instead of carbs. It causes you to lose some weight fast as your body burns carbohydrates from your reserves. This phase is also very strict. Meat, eggs, oil and butter are allowed. A certain amount of cheese is allowed as well.
Ongoing Weight Loss:
In this phase of the Atkins plan, a carbohydrate ladder is followed by slowly building up your carbohydrate intake, you still lose, but you're learning your glycemic intake levels, and curbing your cravings.
There is a full list of allowed food in the Atkins Diet book, but some of the food you're allowed to have is vegetables from the Induction phase, nuts, berries, some fruit and starchy vegetables.
Pre Maintenance:
You enter pre maintenance as you approach your goal. Carbs are increased again, until you are able to eat enough without gaining weight.
Lifetime Maintenance:
A bigger range of food is allowed once you have achieved your weight loss objective. Carbohydrate consumption is increased a bit more as well. You stay at this stage for the rest of your life. Should you start to gain weight, you go back to a previous Atkins diet phase until you lose weight.

Things to watch out for when starting Atkins:
People say that they can't do Atkins because it makes them feel weird, dizzy or just generally funky. Compare it to the alcoholic who has stopped drinking: they go thru DT's - detox on some level, some have it really bad, and some don't. You can - and should - expect a reaction with any diet that you go on that eliminates the garbage in your body.
Disadvantages of the Atkins Plan:
I've had friends say they get really tired, feel sick to their stomachs, and experience headaches in the beginning the Atkins Diet Plan. Carb withdrawal? I haven't cut my carb intake too much in the recent past, so I can't judge.
Low carb intake. I'm happy to switch to healthier carbs, but I won't eliminate them.
Wine and Popular Diets – The Chardonnay Diet
I suggest that you take this article on the Chardonnay diet less seriously than our other articles on popular wine diets. As always, don't go on a diet without getting a checkup and the go ahead from a qualified medical practitioner. Do you really think that you can lose a lot of weight in a short period of time? Do you really think that you should lose a lot of weight in a short period of time even if you can? However, if you are only looking at losing a few pounds you might consider this seemingly painless, five-day diet. As with any diet, unless you change your eating habits, you will soon put on the weight that you lost. One last recommendation before getting into the details, don't overdo your consumption of Chardonnay wine. You'll be drinking a lot so don't drive and don't drink too fast. If you get sick, lose your cool, or lose your control, STOP.
The Chardonnay diet originated in the United Kingdom and has become quite popular in Germany. On day one of this diet drink at least two pots of tea in the morning. Continue drinking tea until you are very hungry. Your goal might be a three o'clock lunch, which should be chicken or a salad. About six o'clock begin to drink some Chardonnay wine. When you can't drink any more (the maximum is one bottle) go to bed. Repeat this procedure for two more days. It is claimed that you can lose about two pounds a day; by the end of day three you should be six pounds lighter.
The fourth day of this diet involves a change of pace. Start with tea in the morning but skip lunch. Around six o'clock eat a healthy, generous dinner and don't worry if you put back on a pound. It's very important to reload your body with vitamins and nutrients after three days of light eating. On the fifth day you fast until six o'clock when you bring out the bottle of Chardonnay. If I were to undertake this diet (I seem to be allergic to tea so I wouldn't) believe me I would not drink a full bottle of wine after fasting all day. Make sure that you eat properly and drink the wine slowly.
After this five-day diet be careful what you eat. Stay away from high-fat foods and keep your meal sizes to a minimum. This lets your body adjust to your new weight and helps you maintain it. I'll chime in with my wine consumption recommendation, a maximum of two glasses a day.
I'll finish this article by quoting some calorie and carb statistics. A three-ounce glass of Chardonnay (or for that matter Pinot Grigio) has 60 calories and 1.2 grams of carbs. The same glass of Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot red wine contains as many calories but twice the carbs. A 12-ounce glass of light beer has almost twice the calories and five times the carbs. Is that why I never heard of a Cabernet Sauvignon or a beer diet?
Liquid Diets
Liquid diets are usually a temporary form of diet advised before a surgery takes place. The liquid diets fall in to two categories. One is a low calorie liquid diet and the other a meal replacement liquid diet.
The low calorie liquid diet is practiced under strict medical supervision only. This diet provides on an average about five hundred to eight hundred calories a day. This is normally a short-term diet plan, mostly recommended to those who have serious obesity problems and need to lose a lot of weight in a short span of time.
The meal replacement liquid diet replaces one or two whole meals with liquids. This type of liquid diet is offered to many people as an effective tool to reduce weight.
A liquid diet consists of fresh fruit juices or shakes. They are prepared keeping in mind nutritiously, along with sweeteners, sugar, skimmed milk and a good quantity of fiber, minerals and vitamins. Certain liquid diets also permit the consumption of solid or real food intake in proportional sizes.
There could also be certain disadvantages an individual encounters while on a liquid diet. The person may get very little fiber, and the important antioxidants present in whole fruits and grains may be left out. This will lead to having a low resistance to disease. Moreover, a liquid diet should be under medical supervision only. The weight lost during the intake of a liquid diet is rarely maintained, as such diets do not teach us to eat right long term. An individual should realize, that although liquid diet works, it is not recommended for everyone.
